Residency
Employees are allowed to live up to 45 miles from the city limits of Belleville, Illinois.
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Telecommunicator Supervisor, receives and responds to telephone or other electronic requests for emergency assistance, including law enforcement, fire, medical, or other emergency services and/or dispatches appropriate units to response sites; does related work as required.
Job Scope
Telecommunications/Dispatch is organized and operates out of the Administrative Division. This position has no budgetary or supervisory responsibilities and is a full-time non-exempt position.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate a multi-line telephone console system, alerting system, and TDD system for the deaf and hearing-impaired.
- Determine and assign the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a computer-aided dispatch system for radio dispatch purposes.
- Monitor and operate a radio console and computer equipment.
- Receive and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints.
- Ask questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the caller’s situation as to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch emergency services, or refer callers to other agencies.
- Dispatch and coordinate the responses of public safety agencies.
- Identify appropriate number and type of equipment or apparatus to dispatch.
- Perform emergency medical dispatch and crisis intervention services.
- Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for emergency medical calls.
- Enters and modifies information into local, state, and national computer databases such as the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS).
- Monitor and respond to a variety of technical systems and alarms.

- Knowledge of the jurisdictional boundaries, or the ability to quickly learn them, for the City of Belleville and contracted agencies.
- Regular and punctual attendance. (Essential job function)
- Typing/word processing skills of 40 wpm required.
- Attention to detail and the ability to contextually shift from task to task is essential.
Education, Certification and Experience Required/Preferred
- Graduation from a general or technical high school or equivalent.
- Comply with the City of Belleville Residency requirements.
- Successful completion of background and drug testing.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License. (Only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than the employee’s mobility is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position)
- Successful completion of Basic 80-hour State of Illinois Telecommunicator Training Course or 40-hour Association of Public Safety Communication Officials (APCO) preferred.
- Successful completion of Emergency Medical Dispatch certification.
